Lovlina Borgohain
About
Lovlina Borgohain from Assam is a celebrated boxer whose most notable achievement was at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where she secured a bronze medal in the women's welterweight (69kg) category. This historic win made her only the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, following in the footsteps of Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. She is the first female athlete and the second boxer from the state to represent India at the Olympics.
Before her Olympic success, Lovlina had already established herself on the world stage with her performances at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She won bronze medals in the welterweight category at both the 2018 and 2019 Championships held in New Delhi and Ulan-Ude, respectively. Her 2019 campaign was particularly noteworthy as she triumphed over Morocco's Bel Ahbib Oumayma before being narrowly defeated by China's Yang Liu in the semifinals.
In 2023, Lovlina further established her legacy by winning a gold medal at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in the middleweight (75kg) division. This achievement positioned her alongside Mary Kom as one of the few Indian boxers to have won both an Olympic medal and a world championship gold.
Additionally, she has earned medals in other prestigious international tournaments, including a bronze at the 2017 Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam and the President's Cup in Astana, as well as a silver at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia and a bronze at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland, both in 2018.
Lovlina's domestic achievements are equally impressive. She won a gold medal at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament in New Delhi and a silver medal at the 2nd edition in Guwahati.
